Uh Oh! These Establishments Were Not in Compliance

Now for the part you've been waiting for…and maybe dreading. These businesses didn't quite make the cut during their inspections. We're not just talking about a little dust here; some of these violations could seriously impact your health. Let's take a look at what went wrong.

  • China Wok, 3247 N. 21st St. (8 Non-Compliance)

This restaurant had a whopping eight violations! Some of the most concerning included: raw fish stored improperly without labeling and proof of approved food source (potentially leading to foodborne illness), cooked noodles and chicken held at unsafe temperatures (allowing bacteria to thrive), and a general lack of date labeling on food items. They also had scoops without handles in food, food containers on the floor, rusty shelving, expired chemical test strips, and employee belongings improperly stored. This is a lot to fix!

  • Kasthamandap Grill, 920 S. 3rd St. (8 Non-Compliance)

Another restaurant with eight violations. Here, inspectors observed cooked naan bread being handled without gloves (a big no-no for hygiene), raw meat stored above ready-to-eat foods (creating a risk of cross-contamination), and missing date labels. The presence of a dead cockroach is also extremely concerning. The restaurant also had spices without labels, rusty storage racks, and accumulated debris. But here's where it gets controversial: some might argue that a single cockroach sighting isn't necessarily a sign of widespread infestation, but health codes are strict for a reason – it's about preventing potential problems.

  • Grand Traverse, 75 N. 3rd St. (7 Non-Compliance)

Grand Traverse racked up seven violations, including dirty ladles, soups and mac n’ cheese held at dangerously low temperatures (below 135F), and salsa stored at an unsafe temperature (above 41F). Also, unlabeled sauces, condensation in the sandwich prep cooler, and missing grout in the dish area. The lack of proper temperature control is especially alarming.

  • Logan’s Ribeye, 100 S. Fruitridge Ave. (7 Non-Compliance)

Seven violations here, with a focus on cleanliness. Inspectors found baking pans covered in carbon debris, scoops without handles, rusty storage racks, and accumulated debris in various appliances and throughout the kitchen. The dish machine sanitizer also wasn't working properly.

  • Top First Wok, 2570 Wabash Ave. (6 Non-Compliance)

Six violations, including a blocked hand wash sink (seriously hindering proper hand hygiene!), chicken held at unsafe temperatures, missing date labels, scoops without handles, rusty cooler racks, and accumulated grease on the ventilation hood.

  • Denny’s, 233 S. 3rd St. (5 Non-Compliance)

Five violations. The lack of thermometers in coolers is a significant issue, as it's impossible to ensure food is being stored at safe temperatures without them. Other issues included pooled water in a cooler, damaged faucets, excessive debris in drawers and on burners, and missing filter covers on the ventilation system.

  • Holiday Inn, 3300 S. US Hwy 41 (5 Non-Compliance)

Five violations at the Holiday Inn, including a dirty ice machine, damaged caulking, dirty spray nozzles, grease on the ventilation hood, and, most alarmingly, cooked potatoes held at a dangerous 98F. Improper cooling methods were also being used.

  • IHop #5408, 2901 S. 3rd St. (5 Non-Compliance)

Five violations, including a malfunctioning sanitizer in the ware washing machine, dishes stacked while wet, rusty shelving, and accumulated debris throughout the kitchen.

  • Marathon Gas, 1701 S. 7th St. (5 Non-Compliance)

Five violations here, focusing on date marking and temperature control. Grab-and-go sandwiches lacked date markings, ready-to-eat items lacked time markings, and gravy was being improperly cooled at room temperature. Inspectors also found rust on a can opener and damaged caulking.

  • El Patron, 7205 S. St. Rd. 46 (4 Non-Compliance)

Four violations. The lack of soap at a hand wash sink is a major red flag. Other issues included missing date markings, food stored directly on the floor, and a hole in the wall.

  • Taj Mahal, 1344 S. 3rd St. (4 Non-Compliance)

Four violations. The presence of multiple dead cockroaches is obviously a serious concern. Other issues included missing date labels, cracked floor tiles, soiled caulking, and debris on shelves.

  • A1 Food Mart, 408 S. 7th St. (3 Non-Compliance)

Three violations: rusty shelving, a broken 3-bay sink, and debris on the walls and ceiling of the walk-in cooler.

  • Greek’s Pizzeria, 5030 S. 7th St. (3 Non-Compliance)

Three violations: accumulated food debris in coolers and freezers, and general debris throughout the kitchen.

  • American Legion Krietenstein #104, 2690 Ft. Harrison (2 Non-Compliance)

Two violations: no paper towels at the hand wash sink, and dark debris in the ice machine.

  • Arby’s #7802, 2155 Lafayette Ave. (2 Non-Compliance)

Two violations: debris on soda nozzles and general debris throughout the kitchen.

  • The Noodle Nook, 1275 Lafayette Ave. (2 Non-Compliance)

Two violations: food stored on the floor and accumulated debris in coolers and on equipment.

  • Bush Family Restaurant, 932 Locust St. (1 Non-Compliance)

    One violation: broken cooler gaskets.

  • Country Club of Terre Haute, 57 Allendale (1 Non-Compliance)

One violation: Employee drinks without lids in food prep areas.

  • Fairfield Inn, 475 E. Margaret Ave. (1 Non-Compliance)

One violation: Employee drink without a lid on a prep surface.

  • Lady Bird Café, 900 Wabash Ave. (1 Non-Compliance)

One violation: Clean food containers stacked while wet.

  • Oriental Market, 2501 S. 3rd St. (1 Non-Compliance)

One violation: Food items on the floor in the walk-in cooler.

  • Wendy’s, 229 S. 3rd St. (1 Non-Compliance)

One violation: Debris on spray nozzles.

  • Zen Bagels, 1275 Lafayette Ave. (1 Non-Compliance)

One violation: Debris in the dough prep counter and cooler drawers.
