Switzerland's Bencic Stuns Swiatek, One Win Away from United Cup Glory (2026)

Could Switzerland be on the verge of their first-ever United Cup title, thanks to an unstoppable force named Belinda Bencic? The Swiss star is tearing through the competition, but Poland isn't backing down!

Belinda Bencic's incredible undefeated streak continues to electrify the United Cup! In a stunning display of resilience and skill, Bencic, Switzerland's top player, orchestrated a remarkable comeback against Poland's Iga Swiatek. After dropping the first set 3-6, Bencic roared back to claim the next two 6-0, 6-3. This victory puts Switzerland just one win away from clinching their maiden United Cup title. Her current record at the tournament stands at an impressive 9-0, including five dominant singles victories.

However, the drama isn't over yet! For Poland to keep their United Cup hopes alive, Hubert Hurkacz faces a critical match against Stan Wawrinka in men's singles. A victory for Hurkacz would force a decisive mixed doubles match. A loss, however, would mean Poland falling short in the United Cup final for the third consecutive year. The pressure is definitely on!

"It’s always a challenge playing against her," Bencic acknowledged after her victory over Swiatek. "Every time I play her, I look for ways to improve and make her life a bit more difficult. I think the difference today was I played very freely, I was really enjoying myself out on the court and I was just really going for it."

Bencic's strategy of aggressive, free-flowing tennis clearly paid off as she won 12 of the final 15 games. While Swiatek, the World No. 2, looked poised to take control early on, the momentum dramatically shifted in Bencic's favor.

Swiatek began the match with authority, holding serve in the first game with four consecutive points. She then secured the first break of the match, followed by another successful hold, establishing a 3-0 lead. But here's where it gets controversial... some might argue that Swiatek became complacent, allowing Bencic to find her rhythm and claw her way back into the match. Bencic responded by winning two consecutive games, narrowing the gap to 3-2 after converting a backhand winner on the third break point opportunity.

Swiatek ultimately managed to close out the first set, winning three of the subsequent four games, including two breaks of Bencic's serve. She sealed the set 6-3 with a well-placed crosscourt backhand winner that Bencic couldn't reach. And this is the part most people miss... even though Swiatek won the first set, the seeds of Bencic's comeback were already being sown.

The second set was a completely different story, showcasing Bencic's dominance. She started by winning nine consecutive points and then, in the third game, demonstrated incredible resilience by saving two break points. In the following game, she capitalized on her third opportunity to secure a crucial break, ultimately finishing the set in a swift 33 minutes. The shift in momentum was palpable.

"To be honest, I felt I was in the match from the very first point," Bencic revealed. "I thought I was going great and I was 0-3 down. I was ‘OK, what do I have to do.’ I think I just tried to keep the level and just wait for some chances."

The deciding third set saw three consecutive games with service holds before Bencic seized the turning point. A powerful forehand set up a break point, which she converted by returning Swiatek's serve with a decisive backhand winner. Swiatek fought valiantly until the very end, holding serve twice and saving two match points with a pair of aces. However, with Swiatek trailing 5-3, Bencic earned triple match point. A final backhand winner into the open court sealed the victory for Bencic. Swiatek, uncharacteristically, recorded 36 unforced errors compared to Bencic's mere 10. Did the pressure of the final get to Swiatek, or was Bencic simply too good on the day?

What do you think? Was Bencic's aggressive strategy the key to her victory, or did Swiatek's unforced errors hand the win to the Swiss star? And can Hurkacz overcome Wawrinka to keep Poland's United Cup dreams alive? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
