In a remarkable achievement for community health, a weight-loss football initiative in Surrey has been awarded the title of national community club of the year. The Guildford Man v Fat football club stands out by organizing engaging six-a-side matches, where teams receive additional points based on their weight loss—an innovative approach that encourages participants to focus on their wellbeing while enjoying the sport.
At the recent Man v Fat football awards, which recognize exceptional contributions to men's health, the Guildford club proudly took home the prestigious club of the year trophy. This accolade highlights their significant role in promoting healthier lifestyles among men.
Team member Mark Smithies shared his thoughts on the experience: "Being part of such a positive and supportive group boosts your confidence and mindset immensely." His words underscore the emotional and psychological benefits of being involved in this initiative.
The club operates with support from Surrey County Council and is recognized by the Football Association as an accredited program aimed at assisting men who have a body mass index (BMI) of 27.5 or higher in their weight loss journey. Each week, players weigh in prior to a 30-minute match, and their progress in weight loss is taken into account alongside the goals scored to determine their standing in the league.
"Joining Man v Fat Guildford has truly transformed my life. I've lost weight, improved my fitness, and forged wonderful friendships throughout this journey," Smithies noted. "I eagerly await our weekly matches, and it has encouraged me to maintain an active lifestyle beyond just football."
He continued, "Mentally, it's been an incredible uplift. The camaraderie of being part of such a positive group really enhances your confidence and mental well-being. It's not merely about football; it's a true community, and I take pride in representing Man v Fat Football Guildford."
Currently, the Guildford club boasts 68 players, and over the past year, participants have collectively shed more than 34 stone (216 kg) in weight. This impressive statistic not only reflects individual success stories but also emphasizes the power of community support in achieving health goals.
