The Batman 2: Scarlett Johansson’s Involvement Sparks Debate
Scarlett Johansson has become the focal point of intense chatter about The Batman 2, with fans speculating about who she might portray. Among the names floated in discussions are Andrea Beaumont/Phantasm, Vicki Vale, and Poison Ivy.
A prominent industry insider, however, suggests a different possibility: Johansson could be joining the film as a character tied to Harvey Dent, who is rumored to appear in the sequel.
During John Rocha’s The Hot Mic podcast, the insider Jeff Sneider revealed that a source connected to a casting agency has indicated ongoing talks over three new roles for The Batman 2 in recent weeks. The trio of proposed parts reportedly includes Harvey Dent, Dent’s wife Gilda Gold, and Dent’s father. Sneider added that casting discussions have targeted two male actors, aged 40 and 60, for Dent and his father. He then stated that Scarlett Johansson is expected to play Gilda Gold.
As of this writing, official confirmation from the filmmakers about Johansson’s role has not been issued.
In the comic books, Gilda Gold first appeared in Detective Comics #66 (August 1942) and has long been connected to Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face. In many renditions of Dent’s saga, Gilda is his fiancée, though their relationship strains after Dent’s disfigurement by the mobster Sal Maroni during his trial, which drives him toward his alter ego.
Gilda features prominently in the Batman: The Long Halloween limited series, with Tim Sale’s art and Jeph Loeb’s writing. The narrative portrays a marriage strained by Dent’s obsession with eradicating Gotham’s organized crime. During this period, a killer known as Holiday emerges, targeting members of Gotham’s crime families.
Eventually, Gilda reveals herself as the original Holiday killer and admits responsibility for the murders up to New Year’s Eve, explaining that she wanted to ease Dent’s burden. She claims that Dent took over the killings after that date. Notably, this confession is presented to readers by Alberto Falcone—Carmine Falcone’s son—who later confesses to being Holiday in some retellings.
This emergence of a Gilda Gold interpretation as a potential major role for Johansson invites careful discussion about how such a figure could influence the film’s exploration of Dent’s dual identities and the broader rogues’ gallery of Gotham.
