How Sabrina and Massimo Bonini Turned Their Passion for Footwear Into Gold
On December 3rd, Massimo and Sabrina Bonini will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the 39th annual FN Achievement Awards. Here's an article from the magazine's December 1st print issue, detailing their journey to success and future plans.
Intuition, an eye for talent, and business acumen are essential for success, but they pale in comparison to the Boninis' unwavering passion. This dynamic duo, behind the Milan-based Massimo Bonini, has been a driving force in the footwear and handbag industry since the late 1980s. Their collaboration with renowned fashion houses and mentorship of emerging designers have propelled them to the forefront of the industry.
The Boninis' initial intuition to focus on a specific segment set them apart from the start. In 1989, they established their first office in Milan's Montenapoleone, dedicated to accessories, a category that was then considered anachronistic. However, they recognized its potential and stayed true to it, riding the wave of the ready-to-wear movement that put Milan on the global fashion map.
From the beginning, they looked beyond national borders, traveling the world to understand diverse markets, forge partnerships with retailers, and initiate international expansion. By 2016, their presence extended to Milan, New York, and Hong Kong. Yet, before the COVID-19 pandemic, they realized the need for significant change. They deepened their market understanding, refined their distribution network, and closed the Hong Kong office to strengthen their commitment to Milan and New York.
The couple established a U.S. presence a decade ago, fostering strong relationships with department stores and independent retailers across the country. This year, they relocated to a larger Madison Avenue showroom to showcase their brand partners, including Amina Muaddi, Herbert Levine, Moon Boot, Castañer, Benedetta Bruzziches, Carel, and Missoni. Their partners praise their integrity, long-term vision, and industry expertise.
Massimo Bonini now operates in over 85 countries, collaborating with 1,800 retailers. Their services encompass development, licensing, production, consulting, and communication. Sabrina Bonini emphasizes the challenge of captivating consumers and the critical balance between creativity and commercial viability.
As the Italian factory landscape evolves, the Boninis are focusing on enhancing their production capabilities. They work closely with key Italian factories to offer bespoke solutions to their brands and have made strategic acquisitions, including a plant in Marche and another in Emilia-Romagna, to support their vision.
Massimo Bonini attributes their success to passion, recalling his consulting days in factories. He values the firsthand experience of witnessing product creation and the dedication of workers. The Boninis' ownership stake in Herbert Levine, a New York shoe brand, exemplifies their strategy of evolving the company and embracing new opportunities.
Arnaud de Lummen, founder of Luvanis, praised the Boninis as 'ideal' partners, respecting legacy while embracing the future. Their passion is infectious, drawing the next generation into the family business. Daughter Giorgia leads the U.S. operations, while son Filippo oversees Milan. The FN Achievement Awards, often dubbed the 'Shoe Oscars,' celebrate style, brand stories, philanthropy, emerging talents, and industry veterans, with the 2025 event supported by Caleres, Listrak, Nordstrom, Skechers, Vibram, and Wolverine Worldwide.
