Dewald Brevis responds defiantly to Herschelle Gibbs’ sharp criticism, asserting, "The opinions of retired legends don’t faze me!" This South African batter, known for his explosive hitting style, is currently facing scrutiny from several former Proteas players who have pointed out inconsistencies in his game. Recently, during a match with the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 league against the Paarl Royals, Brevis scored a mere 12 runs off 15 balls, igniting further commentary on his performance.
The 22-year-old made these statements in the wake of Herschelle Gibbs' harsh remarks on social media platform X, where the ex-South African opener questioned Brevis' ability to manage games effectively and expressed concern about what conversations he might be having with his coaches during matches.
In the ongoing SA20 league, Brevis has struggled at the crease, compiling scores of just 6, 12, 36*, 8, 12, and 12, totaling 88 runs across seven matches. His recent performances also fell short during a five-match T20I series against India before the SA20 kicked off, further amplifying the criticism directed at him.
Brevis firmly stated, "Those comments don’t bother me. When I think about those legends, or whoever they are, I realize they’re no longer part of the game. Their opinions are just that—opinions—and they don’t influence me. I don’t pay attention to it. I’m here to enjoy the game and play as I know how. There will always be outside noise, whether it’s in the SA20 or any other competition."
He added, "Regardless of whether it’s a World Cup or any match, cricket remains the same: a game with a white ball. My focus is solely on enjoying myself and sticking to my playing style. Outside distractions do not affect me."
As a member of the Proteas' squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, Brevis seeks to regain his form ahead of this significant tournament. To date, he has participated in 19 T20 internationals for South Africa, accumulating 469 runs at an impressive strike rate exceeding 173. Last year, he achieved his first T20 century against Australia, where he impressed audiences by relentlessly attacking bowlers, including the seasoned Josh Hazlewood.
South Africa finds itself in Group D of the T20 World Cup, competing alongside Afghanistan, New Zealand, Canada, and the UAE. The team, which reached the finals in the previous tournament, will kick off their campaign on February 9 against Canada at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
