At just two weeks old, William underwent a tracheostomy – a procedure where a hole is created in the neck to insert a breathing tube. "It is taken very seriously," Kate emphasized. "He had to be with someone at all times who knew what to do in the event of an emergency."
In May, after years of careful planning, surgeons at Bristol Children's Hospital performed an eight-hour operation. They skillfully rebuilt William's jaw using bone grafts taken from his ribs. This complex procedure was designed to finally allow William to breathe, eat, and swallow independently. "A frame was put into his lower jaw and we were turning these screws to try and artificially pull it forwards," Kate described, explaining the meticulous process of reshaping his jaw. The success of this surgery has been nothing short of life-altering. The tracheostomy has now been reversed, meaning William no longer needs the breathing tube. And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the medical procedure, it's about the freedom and independence it gives a child.
Now, as William approaches his eighth birthday, his world is opening up in ways his family could only dream of before. He's no longer constantly supervised by someone trained to handle breathing emergencies. He's free to be a kid! What does that mean for William? "He's desperate to go down water slides and he's lined up his little besties to have sleepovers and to go on play dates," Kate exclaimed.
And that first sleepover? "On his first sleepover I think I won't sleep a wink that whole night, it will be enormous but for all the right reasons." A parent's joy and relief are palpable.
